In eager anticipation of the upcoming fall 2008 Philodemic season, interviews have been conducted with the new officer corps. This ongoing series of post will explore the opinions and personalities of the Philodemic leadership.
For this post, we interviewed Dustin Walker, SFS ‘11, who is the current Amanuensis of the Society.
Q: What do you think the Philodemic can expect in fall of 2008? :
A:The Philodemic is truly reaching new heights in overall interest, quality of debate, and plain old good times. If it continues, we’re in for one hell of a ride.
Q: How do you view your officer positions? What are you most exciting about doing?
A: As someone who does something by hand, amanuensis can be translated from Latin as manual laborer. In Ancient Rome, amanuensis was a slave at his master’s personal service “within hand reach” performing any command. My job is not just to record our debates, but to be completely at the service of the society. As the youngest member of the officer corps, I can’t wait to meet the new batch of Philodemicians and welcome them!
Q: What do you like most about the Philodemic?
A: Undoubtedly — the people! This is the greatest group of people. They make Georgetown home!
Q: What’s your impression the previous Philodemic semester (spring 2008), how do you think it went?
A: We handled abortion! Now we can handle anything!
Q: What debate topics or subjects do you want to see this semester?
A: Enemy combatants in american courts, gays in the military, religious symbols in public places, condoms on campus, “The European Union is a giant agricultural subsidy.”
