Even if you are not a current undergraduate at Georgetown, there are many ways that you can still help the Philodemic Society and stay involved.
Our Corresponding Secretary, Allison Wagner, can answer any and all questions concerning Alumni issues, concerns, and questions.
Merrick and Hamilton Debates
The Merrick Debate (held in the Spring) and the Hamilton Homecoming Debate (held in the Fall) are great opportunities for Philodemic Alumni, friends, and family to come back, meet the current members and reconnect with old friends. The Hamilton Homecoming Debate is also keynoted by Alumni. Let us know if you are interested in keynoting!
For information about the events, please email the Philodemic Corresponding Secretary, Allison Wagner, at amw73@georgetown.edu.
Donate
Reason to Donate
The Philodemic Society relies on the extreme generosity of its alumni and friends for support. University funding only partially covers the many needs of the Society. By donating to the Philodemic Society Gift Account, your money will go toward supporting the many ongoing development projects, financing the special debate events, subsidizing cup competitions with other Universities, and supporting the organizational costs of the society (such as room reservations, chair rentals, and printing costs).
We sincerely thank the many generous Alumni for their continued support.
Current Projects
The Society has many ongoing development projects aimed at improving the society’s day to functionality, bringing its history to life, and maintaining its many traditions.
- Library Digitization: We are seeking to digitize the 178 years worth of Philodemic archives and records that currently reside in the Special Collections Office of Lauinger Library. By digitization the library, it will make the history of the society more available to current members, alumni, and researchers. Also, digitization will allow reproduction of the records for storage in the Philodemic Room.
- New Philodemic Library: The Society is reviving the Philodemic Library! The Society’s library once was a prized collection of works that helped society members enrich themselves on a variety of topics. Philodemic inductees used to donate a volume to the library as part of their entry into the society. We’ve revived this practice. Currently, the Philodemic subsidizes these purchases for inductees to help make induction accessible to all undergraduates.
- President’s Dinners: The Philodemic funds weekly dinners open to both members and non-members. The dinners serve as a way for Philodemicians to get to know each other and to facilitate advanced discussion about the weekly resolution.
